Why we feel volunteering is important

Your questions answered

How much time commitment is needed?
We ask for a minimum commitment of 5 hours a month. However, when you do these hours is completely up to you.
Can I fit this around my full-time job or other commitments?
Yes, the role is very flexible. You can volunteer whenever it suits you. Our PTS operates 7 days a week, usually from about 05.00 to 22.00. Our busiest time is during the hours of 10.00 to 19.00, but when you volunteer is completely up to you
Do I need any prior knowledge, experience, or driving qualifications?
No, we provide all the knowledge and skills you need. However, you must have a full UK driving licence with no more than three penalty points.
Do I need a particular kind of transport?
Yes, you need a well-maintained vehicle with 5 doors and at least 4 seats. You must also have appropriate insurance.
Do I need a certain kind of car insurance?
Yes, you need fully comprehensive insurance and be insured to use your vehicle for voluntary purposes, often classed as ‘business use’. You'll need to check with your own insurer.
Will I be expected to provide medical care or just transport?
You won’t be expected to provide any medical care – your role is simply to help transport patients. If a patient is known to need medical care during their journey, they won’t be assigned to you. We’ll give you some basic first aid training, but it’s very unlikely you’ll ever need to use it.
Do I need to help patients physically (lifting, wheelchair assistance)?
We always assess what type of transport each patient needs. As a volunteer, you won’t be asked to help anyone with serious health or mobility needs. Your support will be straightforward – perhaps offering a steadying arm or carrying a bag. You may, occasionally, need to push a wheelchair at the hospital, but you’ll never be expected to lift anyone or assist those who can't leave their wheelchair.
What training will I receive and how long does it take?
You'll attend a 2-day training course, a driving assessment, and complete some online training. This can take up to 8 weeks due to availability.
What support is available if I find something difficult or upsetting?
Support is always available. We encourage our volunteers to speak up if anything feels challenging. We have dedicated staff to support you.
Are expenses covered?
Yes – expenses are reimbursed. The most common expense associated with this role is mileage expenses. Mileage is reimbursed at 45p per mile plus 5p extra for mileage with a patient. Your equipment, uniform, and training are provided free.
What equipment and uniform is provided?
All equipment and uniform is provided at no cost to the volunteer. You'll be provided with a uniform (fleece, polo shirt, hi-vis jacket), ID card, mobile phone, first aid kit, and PTS Volunteer parking sign for your dashboard.
Am I covered by insurance?
Yes, your activity is covered by Trust insurance. However, you must ensure that you're suitably insured to drive, as this is not covered by Trust insurance.
Is there a minimum or maximum age to volunteer as a PTS volunteer?
The minimum age is 18 years. There is no maximum age, but you must be physically fit enough to carry out the role and prepared to undertake an occupational health screening. If you’re unsure or want to talk about your situation, just get in touch – we’re happy to help.
Can I stop volunteering if my circumstances change?
Absolutely. If things change, there’s no obligation to continue. Also, if you feel your current role is no longer suitable for you, we’ll support you to switch roles or take a break. Whatever you need.
